Tencent boards ITV’s Year on Planet Earth
Chinese media giant Tencent has boarded ITV’s forthcoming natural history series A Year on Planet Earth.
Tencent Video, the company’s streaming platform, has joined Fox streamer Fox Nation and Germany’s ARD as co-production parner of the landmark series, produced by indie Plimsoll Productions, which is behind shows such as Night on Earth for Netflix.
The six-hour series draws on the most dramatic stories from all corners of the globe, aiming to draw viewers across the series with an overarching story arc, with the action unfolding like a drama.
The series is being marshalled by Tom Hugh-Jones (Tiny World, Planet Earth II), Dr Martha Holmes (Blue Planet, Hostile Planet) and Grant Mansfield (Hostile Planet, Malika The Lion Queen).
ITV ordered the series back in 2019, with the intent of harnessing global broadcasters to support its first blue-chip commission in two decades. ITV Studios has since helped bring on the US and German partners, with Tencent becoming the latest.
“A Year on Planet Earth is the latest addition to our carefully curated collection of natural history programming and is promising to be an absolute treat,” said Ruth Berry, managing director of global distribution at ITVS. “It is already capturing the imagination of the global market and we are delighted that Tencent Video have joined us in this unique look at the natural world.”
“We hope the co-production partnership with ITV Studios and Plimsoll extends to a long and fruitful adventure to bring blue-chip documentaries to our China and international audiences,” added Lex Zhu, director of Tencent Video’s documentary studio. “We will continue to work with ITV Studios to bring stories about China to the world.”
