Diversity and Sustainability

As film makers, creativity and innovation are the foundations for everything we do and diversity of thought and experience are essential elements of this creative process. Our aim is to create an inclusive workplace that reflects the diversity of Bristol, where everyone feels supported, and able to produce their best work.

Since the company was founded Plimsoll has worked with local community organisations, making a commitment to annual, all-staff volunteering days. Together with our community partners, Babbasa, we also provide work experience placements to encourage and support local young people.

Working with Babbasa, Plimsoll produced a film called Hear Our Stories, highlighting the journeys people from disadvantaged backgrounds have made to become the successful people they are today.

‘Bristol Creates’ is made by young Plimsoll film makers featuring Bristol’s first Poet Laureate, Miles Chambers. The film was integral to Bristol’s bid for the C4 hub.

Through our connections with local schools we have provided television production workshops for sixth formers and provide ambassadors for school careers events. Plimsoll supports the National Geographic Mentoring Programme and the Grierson DocLab Mentoring Scheme.

In September 2020 we launched the Plimsoll Wildlife Internship to provide a bridge into the industry for graduates, from a diversity of backgrounds, with interests in film making and natural history.

James Hanson, Wildlife Intern

James is the first of our interns. He graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in Zoology and a passion for film making. “I’m going to take every opportunity this internship at Plimsoll provides to reach my goal to be part of a natural history documentary team revealing the beauty and importance of the natural world around us”.

As wildlife filmmakers we have a responsibility to reflect the changing environment in our programmes and we recognise the importance of reducing our impact locally and around the world.

Our office is supplied with 100% renewable energy. We are committed to recycling, reducing our use of plastic, sourcing locally and sustainably and have created an audit trail for all purchased office products.

Our productions work with industry environmental initiative, Albert, to reduce waste and carbon emissions. We also recognise the importance of making offsetting contributions for those emissions we can’t reduce. Working with Ecologi, Plimsoll supports the Eden Projects: Gold Standard approved projects which employ local people to plant trees. Plimsoll is an Ecologi Climate Positive Workforce. Our wildlife productions support the World Land Trust carbon balanced programme which protects and sustainably manages threatened ecosystems around the world.
